Abstract

Education in the Nahuatl society began at home, the main teachers were the parents, who educated their children with strict discipline. The Nahuatl conception of the mature man as: "owner of a face and a heart", is the key point in the appearance of his concept of education. To fulfill the function of training this mature man, there is the temachtiani "Nahuatl wise man", in the role of teacher. Formal education was carried out in: The calmécac: this institution was in charge of educating the children of the chiefs of the tribes and the Telpochcalli, the school for commoners. These two institutions were the most important, but they were not the only ones. Continuing with the chronology of Mexican history; At the time of the colony many changes arose in the life of the aborigines. The Spaniards created schools where they taught the aborigines their cultures and mainly the doctrine through friars. Later, the schools where only the doctrine was taught were replaced by the Spanish schools, which were designed to teach the Indian Spanish and in some cases to read and write. The teaching was given by Spanish teachers. Religious orders invented novel methods to transmit religious knowledge such as paintings, catechisms with pictures instead of words, trades, dance, drama, and music. The arrival of new Jesuits in the new Spain led to the creation of great schools and universities, many of which were the most important in Latin America.
