Abstract

In the field of International Relations ethics, the debate between cosmopolitanism and communitarianism is one of the most relevant in contemporary political and ethical theory. Cosmopolitanism holds that human beings, as members of the global community, share universal moral values and obligations. Communitarianism, for its part, emphasizes the importance of local and national communities, and maintains that they have their own ethical dynamics. This debate has given rise to concepts such as global distributive justice and the moral responsibility of rich nations towards poor ones. The essay analyzes the ethical question of whether rich nations have a moral obligation to support poor nations, and if so, to what extent.
