Empathy is colloquially defined as the ability to put oneself in each other's shoes, implying an ability to understand the emotional states of the other. For a long time this characteristic seemed to us an exclusive ability of humans, however recent research has shown us that rodents might be able to experience empathetic states and help their conspecifics who are in stressful situations. These findings have an important impact on the level of dignified treatment of animals and the potential impact on bioethical discussions. This investigation unveils our animal side and shows us that we are more connected with animals than we imagine.
