The quality of the candidates nominated by political parties is a fundamental aspect for the legitimacy of democracies. The representative model in Mexico has been sustained, basically, by the relationship that exists between candidacies and political parties, where citizens have been relegated to the passive role in casting the vote. This article presents the progress of doctoral research in which it is proposed to institutionalize the process of selection of candidates within the political parties, favoring democratic mechanisms that weigh the participation of citizens; the above, based on the theoretical perspective of the political parties of the Italian school, supported by Panebianco (1995) and Sartori (2005).
