The discharge of cheese whey wastewater into rivers by the dairy industry is a pollution problem due to its high content of organic matter, affecting biodiversity. This study analyzed the use of subsurface constructed wetlands planted with polycultures of ornamental plants (Canna hibryds and Alpinia purpurata) at two different densities (4 and 6 plants) and compared with systems without vegetation (controls), to remove COD and BOD. A significant effect was detected regarding plant density compared to controls. With high concentrations of COD (1292-2796 mg/L) and BOD (600-980 mg/l), average removals of 81.9-83.3% of COD, and 77.6-92.6% of BOD were observed in treatments with 4 and 6 plants, respectively. The control systems showed removals of less than 50%, indicating that the main removal was by phytoremediation. The different vegetation densities were not statistically different (p≥0.05), so their use as polycultures is suggested to treat whey.
