National public opinion agrees with the existence of independent candidacies for popularly elected positions. It is thought that independent candidates should be asked similar requirements to those requested of parties in order to be registered. However, there is a refusal to accept that party defectors be registered as independent candidates, especially if they were losers in a selection process.
