Abstract

During the 19th and 20th centuries, one of the most deeply rooted ideas in research was that there was only one type of intelligence, which was closely linked to IQ and largely determined the success achieved in each individual's life. It was from the 80's that Howard Gardner decided to mark the relevance of the results of his research in his book "Structures of the mind". He affirms that there are eight multiple intelligences that any human being can develop or possess a certain ability innately. Such intelligences are: linguistic, logical - mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily - kinesthetic, intrapersonal and interpersonal, and naturalistic. Later, this theory of Gardner's was taken up by Daniel Goleman in his book Emotional Intelligence (1995). The term was first used in 1990 by psychologists Peter Salovey of Harvard University and John Mayer of the University of New Hampshire. It was used to describe the emotional qualities that appear to be important for success. Such as: empathy, expression and understanding of feelings, adaptability, ability to solve intrapersonal and interpersonal problems, etc. In the margin of current education, it is desirable that teachers present a high level of this intelligence because it creates a healthy emotional bond with their students, which allows for better communication and understanding of problems, whether family, sentimental or school.
